LEGEND OF TOBA LAKE
Long time ago, there was a man named Toba who lived in north Sumatra. He worked as a farmer to fulfill his daily life.
One day, while Toba was fishing, he got a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest fish which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, the fish turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her and applied her to be his wife. She agreed, but, Toba must swear not to tell anyone about the origin of his wife who was the embodiment of fish, and if he didn’t keep his promise, there would be a big disaster. Toba made deal and they got married, lived happily and had a son whom they named Samosir.
Several years later, when Samosir was bringing lunch to his father, he felt so hungry and he ate his father’s lunch. When Toba received, he was very hungry because his rice was too late to deliver. After that, Toba became very angry when he saw the rice that was given to him were the remnants. Toba more upset when his son confessed that he ate most of the rice. Then he shouted; “You damn a child of a fish!!” After that Samosir ran home and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broken his promise. Then they ran up the hill, and jumped to a river. Then they turned into two big fish. Lightning struck, accompanied by a thunderous roar. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop poured rain. The river water overflowed everywhere so inundate the valley where the river flowed. Toba could not save himself, he drowned by the inundation of water.
Over time, the puddle became more extensive and turned into a huge lake. Since then, people called the lake Toba, and a small island in the middle of the lake called Samosir.
